I love these flannelboards!! I’m working on the “Seals on the Bus” one right now but I’d love to make the Maisy with the colored houses one. Unfortunately I can’t find the link on the Collaborative Summer Library Program website 😦 I went to the archives and checked last summer’s theme, but no luck. You don’t happen to have the template saved do you? Thanks so much!
Kelly
I don’t have the template saved actually. It came in our Summer Reading Program idea binder, but was unfortunately lost this summer during our library’s flood. So sorry!
I absolutely adore this blog! I ran across it while looking for ideas for my library story hour, and I am so glad! Thanks for sharing all of your great ideas; I was previously daunted at the idea of creating my own flannelboard and “puppets”. Now, all that has faded away to excitement =)
I’m glad that the blog excited you! Flannels are my favorite part of storytime. 😀
thank you for the wonderful ideas
Thank you for reading!
I just found your blog – LOVE your ideas!

Thank you!
is there any way you could put or show how you make your flanneboard stories for different stories
I’ve already made a couple posts on making flannelboards: “Making a Flannelboard: Seals on the Bus” and “Flannelboard: Dear Zoo.” The process is pretty much the same for each flannelboard I’ve made. (The only exception being the flannels that I’ve started doing sewing and embroidery on.)
Very informative and interesting.
I love your site! We homeschool, and I have been trying to find activities for my toddler that his older sister can do with him and your flannel boards have given me so many ideas. Thanks!
I’m glad that you’ve gotten ideas — I hope that your kids get a lot of fun out of playing with flannelboards!
Your blog is great for felt board lovers, and I am pleased that you are using my rhyme, “Ten Teddy Bears.” However, I would like acknowledgment. Heidi (SurLaLune Storytime) has removed it from her site. I don’t require that, but I do require attribution. Another site owner has continued to use it with proper attribution. As with much of what is used without permission on Internet, this rhyme went through many hands before reaching you. This one started with a library website several years ago, but the ownership is mine. I have written a book of felt board activities and it is very important to me to have that acknowledgment. Thank you. Susan Pflug
I have taken down the rhyme and attributed you as the author. When I corrected the Flannel Friday post, I forgot about this page — thank you for the reminder and I wish you the best!
Thank you, Thank you, Storytime Kate!
I will try these – I just can’t wait!
You’re welcome! (And thank you for the rhyme!)
I am trying to find patterns for the story “Is Your Mama a Llama”. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks so much, I love your hard work…
I do not know of any templates for that story — there are quite a few for sale on Etsy though, which could give you ideas to make your own. Hope that helps!
Oh my goodness!!!!! I am a kindergarten teacher and I have just discovered your blog!!! What an outstanding source of ideas . I can’t wait to start making sets of flannel board pictures!!!!!!! Thank you!
Erika
You’re welcome — I’m glad to have helped you get some inspiration!
I love your site!! Your flannels are much more intricate than I could ever produce and are very beautiful. Look forward to following your posts and getting many more ideas. Love that you include where you got your ideas and templates.
Thank you so much!
I’m glad that you are taking ideas away from the blog, and I’m sure that your flannels are lovely. I always try to give everyone the tools to make their own flannels because they are so well-received in storytime! Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a note!
I was really impressed by your flannelboard pieces, especially the elephants and Olivia’s family. Nice work!
Thank you! Olivia’s family was one of my favorites to make!
thank you!!! Fall Leaves here I come!!! The kids at the Richton Park Library will be so happy to have new and exciting flannel boards!
Enjoy them!!
Where do I find the words?? The flannel stories look soooo cute!! Thanks
Vicki
If click on each photo, it will direct you to the blog post where I talk about my source material. If it’s a rhyme/song, words are there. If it’s a book, I don’t put words up for copyright reasons.
I love the birds!!! What story and ryhme do you use?
I still haven’t used that one yet! Someday soon, I hope!
I feel like I just hit the jackpot- Thank you SO much for sharing!! What do you use to cut your felt so perfectly?
I just use an old pair of kid scissors. You can see them in this post: https://storytimekatie.com/2011/10/07/flannel-friday-flannelboard-kit/
Some pairs of scissors cut felt VERY well and some can’t handle it at all.
Katie, I’m very excited to have found your blog! I recently had someone make me a travel flannel board (I don’t sew) and I’m planning to work on some felt activities with my toddler. I’m hoping you wouldn’t mind helping me to choose the best felt for my board activities? I’ve not worked with felt much so I want to make sure not to waste money…
I actually just use the $0.30 felt that you find at most craft/hobby stores. I’ve made a few purchases on Etsy for higher-quality felt when making friends/family gifts, but for the library — I want these pieces to be able to be handled and used without worrying about the cost of having to replace pieces. As of today, it’s been three years and I’ve only had to replace pieces due to loss rather than wear.
I have just now found your site and I love it!!! I use feltboard activities/stories often with my toddlers and they love it!! This just gave me some new ideas to make a few more. Thanks!!
Thank you!
Wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blog! Your Storytime ideas are wonderful!! I work with Children’s storytime at my library and I have gotten a lot of wonderful ideas from your blog. Thanks so much!
You’re welcome! Thank you for reading!
Thank you for the great ideas. I have changed from teaching pre-k to 2’s and needed some more age appropriate ideas. Cant wait to try them.
I Love the felt board themes. I haven’t created since the “Five Little Ducks,” about three years ago. I have to create the “Three Little Pigs (+).” Thanks!
Could you please tell me where I can get the templates for these. They are wonderful!
Love the designs! I was wondering if there are copyright violations on the felt board sets that are based on books?
My personal opinion is that it falls under fair use. I’m not making any money off of my flannels (I do not sell them) and I’m using them in an educational early literacy situation. If you’re worried, I would ask your library’s/school’s legal team.
I love, love, love this website. Thank you StoryTime Katie! I am using a lot of your Alphabet Ideas at home with my 3 year old as I have fun reading and teaching him!
You’re very welcome! Thank you for reading and enjoy the time with your son!
I absolutely love your flannel sets! Do you by chance sell any of these? Etsy,TPT,etc.?
No, I’m sorry. I don’t sell any of my flannel sets.
Hi, newbie here!! You call them flannelboards, but you use felt. Are the “boards” made of flannel? I also see you use the felt sheets, would you say the felt bolts are better/worse than the sheets? I am wanting to make several things like this for my 15 month old for Christmas!! Thank you!!
All of the “flannel” is actually felt. I have no idea why its called flannel actually! The felt sheets are cheaper but the felt bolts are better quality. Just depends on what you’re expecting the wear and tear to be.
these are fantastic!!! I have a question that may be totally ignorant. I’m trying to put together some flannel board pieces and I’m curious about what adhesive works best to attach pieces together. Hot glue? Elmers? Iron on adhesive?
Thank you for all your help!
I recommend using Alene’s Tacky Glue.
Thank you for reading!
Your felt board stories look amazing.
Do you sell them ?
No, I don’t sell them. Sorry!
How do you store all of your felt stories?
I took pictures and explained in this tweet thread: https://twitter.com/storytimekatie/status/831968992092966917
Would you ever make these to sell them !?! I am a one year old teacher and I love using the felt board!!
No, I don’t make any of the flannelboards to sell.
What kind of board do you use to put the felt cut out on?
This is my travel board: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Rite-Flannel-Tabletop-Easel-721GA/dp/B002ARG15Y/
Hi , i made a flannel board but not sure how to stick the small flannel pieces to make the story. Do i need to put velcro on the back? Thanks for your advice.
Most felt sticks to other felt. So, I don’t use velcro because I have a large felt board to stick the pieces to. You might need to use velcro depending on your board. Thanks!
PreK teacher here and I am wanting to incorporate flannel stories into my reading center. I love your stories and your post says you explain how to make them but I haven’t found that yet. Can you please tell me how I can make these or buy them or?? I am wanting to work on these this summer so I have some for back to school. Thank you!
