Outreach Storytime: 6/2

I do a regularly scheduled (sometimes twice monthly and sometimes just monthly) at a local business that we’ve partnered with. For these storytimes geared towards ages 3-6, I’ve thrown out themes! I’m just reading favorites books, new books that strike my fancy, and doing favorite flannels/props/activities. Materials starred are the ones used at the storytime. Other than this difference, I’ll report on these like I do with all of my other storytimes.

How It Went

For this outreach storytime, I pulled mostly books off the new books shelf for a bit of variety instead of from my storytime collection. The kids really enjoyed Quackers because they liked the humor of mistaken identity. And they also responded well to the interactive movements in Dig In!. For our bear hunt, I hid a bear puppet in my bag and pulled him out at the end. Lots of shrieks of delight since it was a mostly preschool crowd. I admit I wouldn’t do that with toddlers or lower!

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear is a soft-covered squishy board book that’s great for reading a page or two at a time. It’s also brightly colored and a younger nursery rhyme collection that I’m very happy with. Then, to satisfy older readers, I went with You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You which is perfect for beginning readers or two voices (older siblings/caregivers).

I really want to have a Nursery Rhymes CD because it’s important to have nursery rhymes read aloud. It’s better for listening to the rhymes, cadences, and sounds of different letters. Think about reading “Jack Be Nimble” versus hearing it chanted aloud as a jumping rhyme.

The toddlers and preschoolers are obsessed with the flannelboard at this library. Normally, they don’t get a lot of opportunities to interact with the felt pieces and the board at storytime. The circulating Bundles were a perfect chance to let them play to their heart’s content with the flannelboard.

It’s the middle of May and the Nursery Rhymes Book Bundle has gone out 9 times since launching at the end of November! I’m okay with this one being a low circulating kit because it’s still an important concept for kids to know.

How It Went

Monday morning
This storytime went amazing. I really feel like we hit our groove just before it’s about time for session break (this was week six out of seven). The kids really enjoyed Split Splat and the different noises that I made to go along with it. I did have one child who chose not to take a butterfly prop and say our rhyme with us, but he sat quietly while the other kids participated. This group LOVED “Five Little Bunnies” and were excellent at hopping around!

Thursday morning
I had to manage a crying child in today’s group (an outside issue not relating to storytime) and that did interrupt the flow of our first story When Spring Comes. We took a moment to take about our rain boots since they come up in the story while the caregiver checked in with the child and was able to get him to calm down and rejoin the group. The kids were really engaged today with the flannelboard in Thursday which isn’t always the case. But none of them guessed cloud until I asked them to look out the window!

Itemized List

  • Backpack ($7.39) — 4Imprint
  • From Head to Toe by Eric Carle ($17.99) — Baker & Taylor
  • My Nose, Your Nose by Melanie Walsh ($16.99) — Baker & Taylor
  • Steady, Ready, Jump: Preschool Fitness Fun ($13.99) — Amazon
  • Lakeshore Learning: Let’s Get Moving! Activity Mats ($49.99) — Lakeshore Learning
  • My Body Match-Up Game & Puzzle ($8.99) — Amazon
  • Mesh Bag ($3.99) — The Container Store
  • Activity Sheets ($2.55) — created in-house

Total: $121.88

I chose From Head to Toe because it’s a classic and identifies body parts, but also because it encourages the reader to get up and do some moving: “Can you do it?”. This is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to get up and do some exercise. To balance it out, I chose My Nose, Your Nose because it talks about body differences in a positive way and also identifies parts of the body that From Head to Toe does not cover.

Since Shakes, Shimmy, and Dance is such a positive class at the library, I knew I wanted to include a music CD to carry that fun home. The Georgiana Stewart CDs provide prompts for movement and are really a great help for caregivers (and librarians!) who might struggle with helping a child do a specific dance.

The Let’s Get Moving! Activity Mats are one of my favorite purchases. I only include five in the circulating Book Bundle, but I’ve used the others in programming often. These are a great way to get kids up and moving. It’s also a backdoor way for me to publicize the Book Bundles. When we used them in Discovery!, I made sure to let caregivers know that they could bring some home if they checked out the Bundle!

Sadly, the My Body Match-Up Game and Puzzle is no longer being sold. It’s a great manipulative since it can be used two ways: as a memory game and a floor puzzle which involves a lot of movement to put together. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the families keep track of these pieces since I can’t replace it anymore. Or that the company starts selling it again!

It’s the beginning of May and the My Body Book Bundle has gone out 10 times since launching at the end of November! This includes a stint where it spent about two weeks on my desk because I was trying to track down the correct copy of From Head to Toe — a library copy was inside the Bundle instead of the Bundle copy.

How It Went

Monday morning
I enjoyed playing with this group and the book Animal Opposites today. When the words were “heavy” and “light”, I pretended like the book was heavy/light and let the kids call the words out and I would react. I did the same with a few other page spreads and it really engaged them. This group really appreciates the flannelboard as a different kind of story, so I do my best to always use it with them. And of, course, they loved the shaking the parachute to Laurie Berkner’s “Fast and Slow”.

Thursday morning
And if Monday’s group loved shaking the parachute, I don’t have a word to describe the group on Thursday’s enjoyment. One of my “omigosh” moments came this week though as I realized that I would have to explain long and short vowels concepts because I was doing the letter O as the Letter of the Day. Thursday’s group definitely grasped the concept better, though I do have two six-year-olds in the class that missed the kindergarten cut-off.

How It Went

I had a great time with a fantastic relaunch today. I think the most energetic song was “Dance With Me” which includes a “jump, jump, jump and slide” chorus. And “Like a Spinning Top” was the probably the most well-received by the crowd. I was happy to have a new artist for Shake, Shimmy! We had shaker eggs out for both “Shakin’ Everywhere” and “Fruit Salad Salsa”. The crowd cleaned up well afterwards and I had many compliments on the program!

How It Went

This was a great session to close out with. My toddlers are always so proud when they can identify their body parts and this theme gives a chance to partner with their baby sibling the whole storytime instead of just during the targeted baby/toddler activity. I will miss these kiddos and the program is kind of up in the air as to whether or not it will be back in the fall. Maybe of my toddlers will be old enough for our preschool time by then! Stay tuned!

  • Lakeshore Learning Moods & Emotions Mirrors ($29.99) — Lakeshore Learning
  • Vinyl Bags ($5.98) — The Container Store
  • Activity Sheets ($2.55) — created in-house

Total: $107.87

All three of my choices are ones that I recommend to caregivers who are working with their children to identify and name emotions. I really think that the interactivity of Glad Monster, Sad Monster is one that can help a child since they can use the masks to “see” the emotions. It’s also another book that I hesitate to keep in the general collection for wear and tear purposes. Also having to inventory the book until return. And I chose the board book of The Feelings Book so that the Bundle didn’t become too heavy.

Hape Expression Eggs is a board book that comes with eggs to match up with their base colors, each describing a feeling. I appreciate the high quality of the materials of this set. I also like that it provided a guided play opportunity while caregivers read the book with their child. Especially because feelings can be hard to understand.

The Moods and Emotions Mirrors were recommended to me by a fellow librarian who has worked with autistic children. The mirrors are a great resource because they provide a photo-realistic image of an emotion and then have a mirror on the opposite side for the child to practice with. I did remove “proud” and “shy” from the set because they are harder emotions and they made the Bundle really heavy for the kids.

It’s the beginning of May and the Feelings Book Bundle has gone out 11 times since launching at the end of November! I am happy with this Bundle and the chances we’re providing for families to work on emotional development at home.

How It Went

Monday morning
Today’s big hit was My Heart Is Like a Zoo. The kids spent time on each page and wanted to count the hearts on all the animals. They also laughed appreciatively as the animals did sillier and sillier things. I think the page that got the most laughs was the herd of hippos drinking apple juice. The Letter of the Day “Z” did trip them up a bit with “zigzag” and “zucchini”. Many of the kids thought that the zucchini was a cucumber. So, it was a great day for new vocabulary!

Thursday morning
I had the very best fake snorers in this group while we were reading Stop Snoring, Bernard. This group also got to get up and practice their American Sign Language with me during our song “Five Little Monkeys Swinging in the Tree”. This was also the group that needed to get up and march around the room to the song “Wimoweh”. Or as they prefer to call it, “The Lion King song!”

How It Went

This storytime was full of incredibly well-behaved and attentive kids. I can’t remember the last time I read every single book that I had packed/pulled and still could have kept going if I had had more. Because of the crowd size and my new location, flannelboards really aren’t working. Nearly everyone has trouble seeing the board and there isn’t an opportunity for me to hold it up on a table or pan it around the room. I might need to make a smaller handheld one to take with me for these storytimes. I also COMPLETELY forgot the words to “Where Is Thumbkin?” halfway through the song. Thanks to the caregiver who bailed me out!
