Flannel Friday: Cakes!

I have two Flannel Fridays for you today, that I used last fall in “Cake” storytime!

These adorable cupcakes come from Money Saving Mom and I originally found them on Pinterest. I did attach all of the sprinkles and toppings with glue, but I left the cupcake liners, frosting, and cupcakes unattached so the kids could play around with them after storytime.

I used “Down Around the Corner” as my rhyme, with a puppet twist:
Down around the corner in the bakery shop
Were five yummy cupcakes with sprinkles on top
Along comes (puppet) with a dollar to pay
He/she buys a cupcake and takes it away
(continue with four, three, two, and one)

Since I usually have more kids that cupcakes and my next flannelboard was participatory, I grabbed some puppets to “eat” the cupcakes. The kids LOVED this.

This counting cake came from Anne’s Library Life.

I also used it as a mix-up flannel and had the kids, one at a time, come to sort and order the cake layers. Since I had more kids, I did this flannel multiple times.

The full write-up for “Cake” storytime will be on the blog on Monday!

Flannel Friday: Very Hungry Caterpillar

And my last — I hope — flannel from the archives, my very first flannelboard ever: The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

20130417-143618.jpg

I’ve used this one in countless amounts of programs — Eric Carle storytime, a Very Hungry Caterpillar party, Letter C storytime, and countless others.

The templates were from DLTK, though I did not use their butterfly. I actually wound up free-handing that based on the book. The butterfly is, of course, my favorite piece.

Flannel Friday: Mouse Paint

And yet again, another flannelboard from the Storytime Katie archives. I made this flannel version of “Mouse Paint” and posted about it in my Colors storytime, but I wanted to pull it out and highlight it for Flannel Friday.

In the original post, I wrote this “brief” note for anyone who wanted to make their own versions:

(As a brief note — I did not make the spiraled paint splots and I did not make the dancing mice. Instead, I asked the kids to dance for the mice and we twirled our fingers in the air and I just overlapped the new color over the old. And, I did not make the paintbrushes and instead just used a real paintbrush before putting the color splots on the white piece of felt. I am all for creative flannel pieces, but I am also a big believer in the less pieces you have and the less you move the pieces around — the better the flannelboard works.)

The template for these pieces came from Kizclub.

Flannel Friday: Farm Pack

Another flannelboard from the Storytime Katie archives. This was the second or third flannelboard that I ever made, way back in 2010! I made a farm pack that I could use pieces for Old MacDonald, Farmer in the Dell, and BINGO. I store all of these pieces together.

The template for these pieces came from DLTK, except for the cat — which I used a cat piece we already had in the library and made a second one for this set since I didn’t like the DLTK cat. If I were making it now, I might make a mini Pete the Cat!!

Flannel Friday: Maisy Mouse

This is an old flannelboard, but one of my favorites! It’s always one that I get a lot of email questions about.

Presenting…a Maisy-based take on the “Little Mouse, Little Mouse, what house are you in?” flannelboard game.

I originally got the template for this in CSLP’s “Make a Splash” Summer Reading Programming binder. There was a template for the house and Maisy in black and white. My library’s copy of the programming binder was lost in a basement flood, so I do not have the original, nor is it available online.

But there are tons of clip art houses for you to substitute. A great place to look is here where there are houses of all different kinds — you could even do different houses if you want to!

Flannel Friday: Thanks A Lot

It seems only fitting that on Flannel Friday’s anniversary that I do a flannelboard inspired by Melissa — the reason that we’re all here! Also, I really wanted to find a way to express my feelings about the whole Flannel Friday crew…I give you “Thanks A Lot.”

This was, of course, inspired by Melissa’s post and hers was inspired by the Raffi song. I actually used this in Manners storytime this past week! The kids loved the pieces and kept playing with the after craft time. One of my favorite little girls wanted to take the “Miss Katie” piece home with her, it was very sweet.

So, thanks a lot, Flannel Friday. I am so glad that you are a part of my life and that I’m a part of yours. ❤

Flannel Friday: Little Birds

This delightful Flannel Friday comes from Melissa at Mel’s Desk!

Melissa uses these with the Elizabeth Mitchell song “Little Bird, Little Bird.” I did purchase the song and have added it to my storytime playlist, but I still have to learn it for myself!

I don’t have these scheduled for a storytime yet, but these birds were so sweet, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make them!

Flannel Friday: Counting Sheep!

For this week, I have adorable sheep that Mary from Miss Mary Liberry was kind enough to share and give a pattern for!

Unlike Mary, I am not a puffy paint expert, and therefore, I only had black on hand to write out the numbers.

I will be using this in my Number Ten storytime, which is coming up in a few short weeks! Like Mary, I will probably do a lot of discussion and game playing with this set, and I do plan on reading “Counting Ovejas” since I am also a huge bilingual area.

Flannel Friday: Pete the Cat

I’m back! After a ridiculously long Flannel Friday (and blog) holiday, I’ve finally dusted off the flannel kit and made some new materials!

But I think the most important question here is how have I not already flannelized Pete the Cat??

I was inspired by Lisa at Libraryland to make my Pete standing up so that I could do all the Pete stories. Right now, I only made enough pieces for “I Love My White Shoes.”

Already, I’ve used this in an outreach visit and also during “Socks and Shoes” storytime — it was a big hit!

Flannel Friday: Rudolph, Rudolph

Welcome to the holiday edition of Flannel Friday! This Flannel Friday is brought to you by one very generous Library Quine, who provided the pattern.

We generally do not do a holiday themed storytime at the library (I’ve done one, specially billed as a Christmas storytime), but this Rudolph flannel was too cute not to make! I really hope that a daycare or outreach opportunity comes up when I can use it in the library!

The rhyme came from Crafty Chic Mommy‘s blog.
