Flannel Friday: Pumpkins!

Today’s Flannel Friday is about a month too late! I made these pumpkins back in August actually, and completely forgot where I put them. I found them when I cleaned off my desk this month and thus am posting them for inspiration for next year’s flannels.

I freehanded a simple pumpkin shape and made the pumpkins. Afterwards, I made some face pieces for the kids to help me build pumpkins. Since the face pieces aren’t attached with glue, I can also use these pumpkins in “Five Little Pumpkins” as well.

Flannel Friday: Fall Is Not Easy

The first place I remember seeing “Fall Is Not Easy” by Martin Kelley as a flannelboard was on Cate’s blog: Storytiming. As you can see, many Flannel Friday crew members have done this flannel! And for good reason!

I used this flannelboard in “Leaves” storytime and will obviously use it again. The kids SHRIEKED when I changed the leaves. I didn’t do all of the pages. (Especially “Eat at Joe’s” since it’s not super prevalent in the Chicagoland area.)

Flannelboard Flashback: CSLP 2010

Since I recently re-did my Flannelboards page, I noticed that I never blogged about a few of my flannels. These four flannels were made in the Summer of 2010 to go with the theme “Make a Splash!”

“Five Big Whales”
Five big whales in the sea offshore // One swam up to spout and that left four.
Four big whales in the deep blue sea // One swam up to spout and that left three.
Three big whales in the sea so blue // One swam up to spout and that left two.
Two big whales having loads of fun // One swam up to spout and that left one.
One big whale longing for the sun // He swam up to spout, and that left none!

I got the whale image from Google, and the rhyme came from an Ocean Life Email Compilation which is no longer hosted on OCLC’s website.

“Five Cranky Crabs”
Five cranky crabs were digging on the shore.
One swam into a net and then there were four.
Four cranky crab were floating in the sea.
One got tangled up in seaweed, then there were three.
Three cranky crabs were wondering what to do.
One dug a deep, deep hole. Then there were two.
Two cranky crabs were warming in the sun.
One got scooped up in a cup. Then there was one.
One cranky crab was smarter than his friends.
He hid between the jagged rocks. That’s how the story ends!

The template for Cranky Crab came from Carroll Public Library’s Beach Fingerplays and the rhyme came from Preschool Education.

“Five Little Fishes”
Five little fish swimming by the shore; one got caught then there were four
Four little fish swimming in the sea; one got caught then there were three
Three little fish swimming in the blue; one got caught then there were two
Two little fish swimming in the sun; one got caught then there was one
One little fish swimming straight for home decided it was best to never roam

This flannel was another Google Image template and the rhyme was found at Addison Public Library.

“Five Little Ocean Friends”
Five little ocean friends on the ocean floor,
The starfish walks away and now there are four
Four little ocean friends living in the sea
The crab slides away now there are three
Three little ocean friends looking for a clue
“Glub, glub,” said the lobster now there are two
Two little ocean friends not having much fun
Off swam the sea horse now there is one
One little octopus sad and all alone
Back swims the starfish, back swims the crab,
Back swims the lobster, back swims the sea horse
And they played in the sea foam, safe in their home.

The template and rhyme for Five Little Ocean Friends came from Carroll Public Library’s Beach Fingerplays.

Flannel Friday: X-Rays!

After a personal vacation, and then work CRAZINESS with other staff members taking their time off as well, things have been pretty quiet on the blog. (Sorry about that!) But I’m back, starting today, and for a long time to come!

Today, I give you a super simple flannelboard for use during your doctor storytimes or Letter X storytimes: X-Rays!

This was a simple matching game. I laid out the x-rays and the kids told me what words matched the x-rays. They also pointed to their bodies as we matched up words with x-rays. I enjoyed this flannel because it was simple and effective and it also was incredibly interesting to talk to the kids about pictures of their bones.

Flannel Friday: Watermelon!

This Flannel Friday was inspired by an Etsy set that I found on Pinterest. Since the shop is closed now, I just made my own!

I used a basic semi-circle template that I freehanded. I was brave and used puffy paint for the numbers and letters, but I did cut out black felt pieces for the watermelon seeds.

This is for my Letter W storytime and I could have used it for picnic storytime as well. It would also work great in summertime!

Flannel Friday: Mrs. Wishy-Washy

Today’s Flannel Friday is a beloved children’s classic: Mrs. Wishy-Washy!

I know that a ton of Flannel Fridayers have made this one, from various templates and patterns. I used the Kizclub version, but I did not make a ton of each animal. Instead I used the last template of each animal, reversed it, and then glued it on double-sided.

I used this back in “Messy” storytime, and it could definitely be used in a “Farm” theme as well!

Flannel Friday: Popsicles!

Today’s Flannel Friday is an inspired by post — these fabulous popsicles come by way of Cate at Storytiming!

I made the flannelboard using Cate’s template and purchased the amazing CD that Cate posted about! There are a ton of different ways to use this: colors, sweets, summer, etc. — but I’m going to use it for a “Picnic” storytime next week.

Flannel Friday: Leaves!

This week, I am inspired by Sarah of Awesome Storytime to make my own leaves and tree:

I will definitely be using the song that Sarah posted:

The Leaves of the Trees
(to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”)
The leaves of the trees turn orange and red
orange and red, orange and red
The leaves of the trees turn orange and red
All through the town.

The leaves of the trees come tumbling down
tumbling down, tumbling down
The leaves of the trees come tumbling down
All through the town.

The leaves on the ground go swish, swish, swish
Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish,
The leaves on the ground go swish, swish, swish
All through the town.

Also, I made enough leaves to pass out to the kids, so it will also be an interactive flannel! I’ve got this one scheduled for a “Leaves” theme sometime this fall!

Flannel Friday: Strawberries!

This week’s Flannel Friday is inspired by Melissa, and her post “5 Strawberries.”

I used a clip art strawberry that I liked and used Publisher to stretch it out to make different sizes. (Melissa does have a template up on her blog that I completely forget about when I pinned the picture to Pinterest! I need to start making better comments!) Like Melissa, I did the seeds with embroidery floss since it was easier for me as my puffy paint stock is black, white, and pink.

When I did this during “Letter S” storytime, I used our storytime mascot to pull off the strawberries in this rhyme:

Five red strawberries, sweet to the core.
Bear came and ate one and then there were four.

Four red strawberries, growing near a tree.
Bear came and ate one and then there were three.

Three red strawberries, for you and you and you.
Bear came and ate one and then there were two.

Two red strawberries, sitting in the sun.
Bear came and ate one and then there was one.

One red strawberry, left all alone.
Bear came and ate it and then there were none.

(Rhyme was modified by one that Abby posted about apples!)

Anyway, you can guess that the kids LOVED seeing a puppet grab pieces off the feltboard! I will definitely be using this flannel again in “Picnic” storytime in a few weeks!

Flannel Friday: Ten Flashing Fireflies

Today’s “Inspired by Flannel Friday” post was inspired by two of the Flannel Friday crew: Amy at Catch the Possibilities and Alison of Miss Alison Is Blogging!

I did use the book by Philemon Sturges as rhyme, so I will not be printing it here. I did modify it a bit to be a bit more repetitive since my kids love repeating the rhyme lines with me.

I used this flannel at my “Animals at Night” storytime, which will be posted this Monday!
