Flannel Friday: Weather

Today’s flannelboard came from While She Naps, which I found on Pinterest.

Free templates for this flannelboard are available on Abby’s website (and she has a ton of other patterns for crafts available for purchase as well).

I will be using this flannelboard with the song:

“What’s the Weather?” (Tune: Clementine)
What’s the weather, what’s the weather,
What’s the weather, everyone?
Is it windy, is it cloudy,
Is there rain, or is there sun?

And way down here I have ten toes.
I have two eyes that I can blink.
I have a head to help me think.
I have a chin, and very near,
I have two ears to help me hear.
I have a mouth with which to speak,
And when I run, I use my feet.
Here are arms to hold up high,
And here’s a hand to wave goodbye.

This little squirrel said, “Come, climb this tree.” (run fingers up other arm, quickly)
And crack these nuts: one, two, three! (clap hand three times)

Craft

I made this craft up, based on the book “Just How Long Can a Long String Be?” I had the kids color a bird and then we glued down ripped paper and string to make a bird’s nest. The kids had a ton of fun ripping up the paper, but they did have some difficultly gluing down the string.

How It Went

I made a grave mistake in this storytime — I did not check our copy of “One, Two” since I had read it before in storytime. We were missing not one, but two pages, so I had to make up the rhymes on the spot. The biggest hit of storytime was “Five Little Nails” since it’s such a noisy one! Their favorite book was probably “Whose Nose and Toes?”

Hats!

Hats on farmers made of straw (shovel hay)
Hats on artists when they draw (paint)
Hats on kids out in the sun (shade eyes)

This is the way she folds her hands
And lays them in her lap

Song: “Silly Hat Song” (Tune: This Old Man)
On my head, I wear my hat.
It is such a silly hat
That my head will wiggle waggle to and fro
Where else can my silly hat go?

Craft

I got this craft from Sarah at Awesome Storytime and it was a big hit. I put out tons of craft supplies and let the kids go to town. We had some very creative hats!

How It Went

This is such a great storytime theme; I’m surprised it took me this long to do it! Their favorite book was “Twelve Hats for Lena” because they loved telling me which holiday she decorated her hat for, but I think the book that got the most laughs was “A Hat for Minerva Louise.” They really enjoyed telling me what Minerva Louise was really wearing instead of a hat. The best part of storytime, however, was the flannelboard game. The kids were screeching with delight as we tried to find Little Cat. It’s been a while since I did a hiding flannel with them, and they definitely missed it!

Flannel Friday: Pirates!

I bring you, not one, but TWO amazing pirate-themed flannelboards today!

The first was is an “Inspired By Flannel Friday” post, with credit to Library Quine at Loons and Quines for the amazing idea and link to the template on Making Learning Fun.

This flannelboard is done to the tune of “Mary Wore a Red Dress.” I didn’t make enough eye patches for the kids to each have one, but I had them shout out their favorite colors and that’s how I switched it up.

The second flannelboard comes from Mega Storytime.

I used regular Microsoft clip-art for this one, and just laminated it. The kids had a lot of fun with the rhyme:

5 Pirates on a Treasure Chest
Five pirates on a treasure chest, one jumped off and four are left.
Four pirates on a treasure chest, one slid off and three are left.
Three pirates on a treasure chest, one tumbled down and two are left.
Two pirates on a treasure chest, one blew away and one is left.
One pirate on a treasure chest, hhe climbed down and now there are none.
No pirates on a treasure chest! Yo ho ho and now it’s all MINE!

I used both of these in pirate storytime, which I will put the plan for up in a few weeks!

Craft

This is a craft from Totally Tots. This is one of my favorite of their letter crafts, and I was super thrilled to use it!

How It Went

Another successful storytime with my daycare group. Letter M is a great letter, with lots of different ideas so this storytime was a breeze to plan. Their favorite book was “Kitten’s First Full Moon,” which made me super happy since Kevin Henkes is one of my favorite picture book authors of all time. And as always, my Little Mouse flannelboard thrills them to no end!

Craft

This was a craft from KidsSoup, and it was very simple! I could have cut out tons of toppings, but I find most kids just prefer cheese at this age.

How It Went

Pizza storytime was SO fun! I love doing this theme because there are some great pizza books out there. Their favorite books were “Hi, Pizza Man!” and “Pizza at Sally’s.” I did not have a good group for “The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza,” so I wound up abbreviating a lot of the humor in that book. It made me a little sad, but you have to roll with the punches in storytime! Their favorite extension activity was, of course, “If You Wanna Eat a Pizza.”

Messy!

At night, with their mother,
They curled up in a heap, (Make fists, palms up)
And squealed and squealed
Till they went to sleep. (Tuck thumbs under fingers)

Craft

Today’s craft was super easy. I bought giant stamp pads at our craft store and pulled out all the foam stamps that we had, porcupine rings, and these cars where the tire treads are designed. Then, I let the kids go to town. This was less messy than fingerpaint, but still messy enough that I had parents who asked to borrow some of our craft smocks!

How It Went

This storytime was a blast! I had so much fun, and we had a GIANT group of kids. The best book by far was “Dog’s Colorful Day,” which they cannot get enough of. I definitely had some kids sing along with me during “I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More” because their afternoon preschool class reads it all the time. It was super nice to have someone sing with me!

Craft

This is another craft from KidsSoup. I had all of the fruits and veggies cut out, as well as the plate basket. (Thank you, teen volunteers!) The kids colored and glued their food down. It was a very simple craft that went over very well.

How It Went

We had a much better storytime experience this week than last, which I was grateful for. The kids all insisted that they eat their vegetables at home, but I saw several moms shake their heads and laugh when I posed the question. The best book of the day was “Eating the Alphabet” and the kids were thrilled when my mouse puppet ate the food off of the flannelboard.

Flannel Friday: Little Cat

This week I’m sharing the flannelboard I used for “Hat” storytime this week!

This is essentially “Little Mouse” just rhyming cat and hat instead. First, the kids and I talked about different kinds of hats and they helped naming them. Then, I told them I had hidden a cat underneath one hat and we had to guess which one. I chanted, “Little cat, little cat, are you under the _________ hat?”

As always, this kind of a flannelboard worked wonders and we played several times before the kids began to guess quicker where I had hidden the cat.

For the clip art, I used Microsoft Office pictures so I unfortunately do not have any files to link up. The cat is from my Old MacDonald set that I borrowed for this flannelboard.

Craft

This craft was based on an idea that I saw on KidsSoup. I spiced it up by buying glitter foam stickers, which the kids loved. As with most of my sticker crafts, at least a quarter of the stickers wound up on the kids instead of the paper.

How It Went

Only half of my daycare group made it this week, so it was a much smaller storytime. This was good and bad because the kids got a lot of individualized attention, but it also seemed to make them more restless. Their favorite stories were “Lola at the Library” and “The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza.” And they have a great time when I brought out my llama puppet to sing — most of them had no idea what a llama was!
