ALSC: Process & Product Art In Storytime

newalscblog

Yesterday, I posted over at the ALSC blog about a hot storytime debate — process vs. product art in storytime. I tried to have a balanced approach, so let me know what you’re thinking!

I read Susan Striker on this subject years ago when I started offering crafts at my storyhour. Over the years I have tried to combine the two, process and product, so that I’ve been able to come up with a calendar of product-looking crafts that are non cookie cutter. For example, after princess & superhero storyhour this week, we made crowns. I gave them strips of wallpaper, and they cut the triangles to make the jagged edges (scissor skill), pasted on the glitter and jewels (small motor). Everyone’s looked different, and the younger ones just had fun cutting the strips up. Here’s my craft calendar link: http://gulfbeacheslibrarykids.blogspot.com/p/craft-calendar.html
I’m sure you’ve got a lot of similar great projects to your credit!

Thank you for sharing your calendar! I’m sure that lots of librarians will benefit from seeing it!
