Flannel Friday: Popcorn!

I’m back for this week’s Flannel Friday, with a rhyme from Melissa at Mel’s Desk.

Put up the five kernel shapes on the board, as spread out as you can. When you say POP! slap a white popcorn shape right on top of one of the kernels.

Five Little Kernels
Five little kernels sizzling in the pot
All of a sudden, one went POP!
Four little kernels… etc.

I used this in camping storytime and it was a hit! Also, it’s super easy to make since Melissa has the templates available on her blog.

Craft

This was a craft kit that I bought from Oriental Trading. All of the foam shapes were peel and stick and the kids LOVED their pirate hats. We had several kids up in the department afterwards working on their treasure map coloring sheets and swashbuckling their crayons.

How It Went

I know I say this all the time, but this was an AMAZING theme for storytime! The kids had SO MUCH fun with the extension activities and shouting “ARR!” with me. The hit of storytime was “Bubble Bath Pirates,” and I have to thank a neighboring librarian who recommended and pulled the book for me — it is definitely being purchased for our storytime collection.

Craft

I made this craft up, based on the book “Just How Long Can a Long String Be?” I had the kids color a bird and then we glued down ripped paper and string to make a bird’s nest. The kids had a ton of fun ripping up the paper, but they did have some difficultly gluing down the string.

How It Went

I made a grave mistake in this storytime — I did not check our copy of “One, Two” since I had read it before in storytime. We were missing not one, but two pages, so I had to make up the rhymes on the spot. The biggest hit of storytime was “Five Little Nails” since it’s such a noisy one! Their favorite book was probably “Whose Nose and Toes?”

Craft

I got this craft from Sarah at Awesome Storytime and it was a big hit. I put out tons of craft supplies and let the kids go to town. We had some very creative hats!

How It Went

This is such a great storytime theme; I’m surprised it took me this long to do it! Their favorite book was “Twelve Hats for Lena” because they loved telling me which holiday she decorated her hat for, but I think the book that got the most laughs was “A Hat for Minerva Louise.” They really enjoyed telling me what Minerva Louise was really wearing instead of a hat. The best part of storytime, however, was the flannelboard game. The kids were screeching with delight as we tried to find Little Cat. It’s been a while since I did a hiding flannel with them, and they definitely missed it!

Flannel Friday: Pirates!

I bring you, not one, but TWO amazing pirate-themed flannelboards today!

The first was is an “Inspired By Flannel Friday” post, with credit to Library Quine at Loons and Quines for the amazing idea and link to the template on Making Learning Fun.

This flannelboard is done to the tune of “Mary Wore a Red Dress.” I didn’t make enough eye patches for the kids to each have one, but I had them shout out their favorite colors and that’s how I switched it up.

The second flannelboard comes from Mega Storytime.

I used regular Microsoft clip-art for this one, and just laminated it. The kids had a lot of fun with the rhyme:

5 Pirates on a Treasure Chest
Five pirates on a treasure chest, one jumped off and four are left.

Craft

This is a craft from Totally Tots. This is one of my favorite of their letter crafts, and I was super thrilled to use it!

How It Went

Another successful storytime with my daycare group. Letter M is a great letter, with lots of different ideas so this storytime was a breeze to plan. Their favorite book was “Kitten’s First Full Moon,” which made me super happy since Kevin Henkes is one of my favorite picture book authors of all time. And as always, my Little Mouse flannelboard thrills them to no end!

Craft

This was a craft from KidsSoup, and it was very simple! I could have cut out tons of toppings, but I find most kids just prefer cheese at this age.

How It Went

Pizza storytime was SO fun! I love doing this theme because there are some great pizza books out there. Their favorite books were “Hi, Pizza Man!” and “Pizza at Sally’s.” I did not have a good group for “The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza,” so I wound up abbreviating a lot of the humor in that book. It made me a little sad, but you have to roll with the punches in storytime! Their favorite extension activity was, of course, “If You Wanna Eat a Pizza.”
