This flannelboard comes courtesy of Mollie at What Happens in Storytime!
Making this flannelboard was super easy — I just got some simple clip art and cut it up right before storytime. The kids loved doing the hokey pokey as I put the different food up on the board. I did use a potato instead of an apple on the suggestion of a storytime mom; their family bakes potatoes in the coals of their fire!
Lyrics are from Preschool Education, originally brought to my attention by Mollie:
“Camping Pokey”
Sung to: “Hokey Pokey”
You put your marshmallow in,
You take your marshmallow out,
You put your marshmallow in
and you shake it all about,
You do the campfire pokey,
and you turn yourself around,
And that’s what it’s all about, hey!
Substitute “marshmallow” with hot dog, apple, popcorn, and anything else that you can roast over the campfire.

I had also seen this flannel idea, but I didn’t have time to make a flannel for my camping storytime, so instead I had a volunteer make a pretend campfire out of construction paper and a paper plate. Then we used shaker eggs and pretended they were different foods while shaking them over the fire to the Campfire Pokey song. The kids loved it! I’d love to try the flannel version when I have some time to make it, but I wanted to share the alternative as well in case anyone wants to mix it up.
Very cute! Love using the Hokey Pokey as a jumping off point for a themed version of a get-up-and-move activity to get the wiggles out before continuing a storytime. It always helps the little ones settle back down for another book or two. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this week! Hope you have a lovely weekend!
