Flannel Friday: Bear Hunt!

This week’s Flannel Friday is inspired by Sarah from Read It, Again!

After my storytime kids enjoyed “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” so much in my camping storytime, I knew I needed to make some flannel pieces so that we could do it again. Luckily, Sarah’s pictures were very easier to follow and I did my best to replicate them. Here’s the rhyme I learned in library school:

Action Rhyme: “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”
We’re going on a bear hunt (We’re going on a bear hunt)
Gonna catch a big one (Gonna catch a big one)
I’m not scared (I’m not scared)
What a beautiful day! (What a beautiful day!)
Oh look! It’s some long, wavy grass!
Can’t go under it (Can’t go under it)
Can’t go over it (Can’t go over it)
Can’t go around it (Can’t go around it)
Gotta go through it (Gotta go through it!)
(Trees, River, Storm, Cave, etc. until you meet a bear; then run back!)

Since my flannelboard has a shelf hidden between the easel (you can see it here), I hid a bear puppet behind it and pulled it out once we found the bear! As you can imagine, that led to a lot of delightful shrieks, so it was well worth it.

Flannel Friday: Four Little Rockets!

This Flannel Friday is brought to you by Andrea from Rovingfiddlehead Kidlit!

Although Andrea has a template available, I made these from a clip art search on Google and did the black backing to give it more of a space theme. I made five (because as we all know, that’s the magic number in storytime!), and then went back to Andrea’s rhyme and saw it’s only for four little rockets. Here it is:

Four Little Rockets
Four little rockets winking at me.
One shot off and then there were three!
Three little rockets with nothing to do.
One shot off, and then there were two!
Two little rockets afraid of the sun.
One shot off, and then there was one!
One little rocket alone is no fun.
It shot off, and then there was none!

I am hosting Flannel Friday this week, so stop back for more flannel-goodness tonight!

Flannel Friday: Campfire Pokey!

This flannelboard comes courtesy of Mollie at What Happens in Storytime!

Making this flannelboard was super easy — I just got some simple clip art and cut it up right before storytime. The kids loved doing the hokey pokey as I put the different food up on the board. I did use a potato instead of an apple on the suggestion of a storytime mom; their family bakes potatoes in the coals of their fire!

Lyrics are from Preschool Education, originally brought to my attention by Mollie:

“Camping Pokey”
Sung to: “Hokey Pokey”
You put your marshmallow in,
You take your marshmallow out,
You put your marshmallow in
and you shake it all about,
You do the campfire pokey,
and you turn yourself around,
And that’s what it’s all about, hey!

Substitute “marshmallow” with hot dog, apple, popcorn, and anything else that you can roast over the campfire.

Flannel Friday: Popcorn!

I’m back for this week’s Flannel Friday, with a rhyme from Melissa at Mel’s Desk.

Put up the five kernel shapes on the board, as spread out as you can. When you say POP! slap a white popcorn shape right on top of one of the kernels.

Five Little Kernels
Five little kernels sizzling in the pot
All of a sudden, one went POP!
Four little kernels… etc.

I used this in camping storytime and it was a hit! Also, it’s super easy to make since Melissa has the templates available on her blog.

Flannel Friday: Weather

Today’s flannelboard came from While She Naps, which I found on Pinterest.

Free templates for this flannelboard are available on Abby’s website (and she has a ton of other patterns for crafts available for purchase as well).

I will be using this flannelboard with the song:

“What’s the Weather?” (Tune: Clementine)
What’s the weather, what’s the weather,
What’s the weather, everyone?
Is it windy, is it cloudy,
Is there rain, or is there sun?

Flannel Friday: Pirates!

I bring you, not one, but TWO amazing pirate-themed flannelboards today!

The first was is an “Inspired By Flannel Friday” post, with credit to Library Quine at Loons and Quines for the amazing idea and link to the template on Making Learning Fun.

This flannelboard is done to the tune of “Mary Wore a Red Dress.” I didn’t make enough eye patches for the kids to each have one, but I had them shout out their favorite colors and that’s how I switched it up.

The second flannelboard comes from Mega Storytime.

I used regular Microsoft clip-art for this one, and just laminated it. The kids had a lot of fun with the rhyme:

5 Pirates on a Treasure Chest
Five pirates on a treasure chest, one jumped off and four are left.
Four pirates on a treasure chest, one slid off and three are left.
Three pirates on a treasure chest, one tumbled down and two are left.
Two pirates on a treasure chest, one blew away and one is left.
One pirate on a treasure chest, hhe climbed down and now there are none.
No pirates on a treasure chest! Yo ho ho and now it’s all MINE!

I used both of these in pirate storytime, which I will put the plan for up in a few weeks!

Flannel Friday: Little Cat

This week I’m sharing the flannelboard I used for “Hat” storytime this week!

This is essentially “Little Mouse” just rhyming cat and hat instead. First, the kids and I talked about different kinds of hats and they helped naming them. Then, I told them I had hidden a cat underneath one hat and we had to guess which one. I chanted, “Little cat, little cat, are you under the _________ hat?”

As always, this kind of a flannelboard worked wonders and we played several times before the kids began to guess quicker where I had hidden the cat.

For the clip art, I used Microsoft Office pictures so I unfortunately do not have any files to link up. The cat is from my Old MacDonald set that I borrowed for this flannelboard.

Flannel Friday: Four Little Stars

This flannelboard is a few weeks late! I was supposed to have this up in time for the Dream Big — Read! Extravaganza, but camera problems prevented me from posting, so I saved it for today! (Ironically, Sharon is hosting this week again!!)

I was inspired by Mollie to make this set and will be using the rhyme she suggests:

“Four Little Stars”
Four little stars winking at me.
One shot off and then there were three!
Three little stars with nothing to do.
One shot off, and then there were two!
Two little stars afraid of the sun.
One shot off, and then there was one!
One little star alone is no fun.
It shot off, and then there was none!

Flannel Friday: Cookies!

This week Flannel Friday is brought to you by this amazing blog post from Ikatbag (found via Pinterest) and a fabulous rhyme from Melissa!

I used this in Jobs storytime, and I plan to use it when I do a sweets-themed program. And who knows when else?

First, I did pat-a-cake and rolled out the flannel pieces on the board. Afterwards the kids and I “frosted” our flannel and make-believe cookies to sell in our shop, which led us to our rhyme:

Down around the corner in the bakery shop
Were five little cookies with sprinkles on top…
Along came someone with a nickel to pay
And they bought a little cookie and they took it away.

This was a great rhyme to use and the kids really enjoyed the interactive portion of the flannel. It was a LOT of work, but again it’s something that I really enjoy doing in my spare time, so I’m not bothered at all by a lot of work!

Flannel Friday: Lunch!

Today’s post was inspired by three Flannel Friday participants: Sarah, Anne, and Sharon! It’s a flannelized version of “Lunch” by Denise Fleming.

Sarah provided the template for these pieces and I made them on the plane back from ALA Midwinter.

I will be using these tasty looking veggies and fruits during Letter L storytime and will also be bringing a mouse puppet to eat them off of my flannelboard. The kids get a HUGE kick out of puppets eating felt pieces (like in “Ouch”) and I knew that I would definitely do it again with this flannelboard.

ALSO! I used these pieces during my clouds/rainbow storytime a la Andrea in a “Magical Rainbow Stew” flannel. All I needed to do was made a separate rainbow piece and I was set to go!
