I use the rhyme “Two Little Blackbirds” A LOT. I always thought that I looked silly just holding up my hands (I only have one blackbird puppet), but never thought to make a set of finger puppets until I saw this pin on Pinterest.
I freehanded this, just cutting it out of felt. It was a super easy one to make (I sewed during commercials!) and I will definitely be using this multiple times!

I work in a school library with visually impaired students. Some have low vision and some have none at all. I love the idea of your flannel boards but I’m not sure how to make them more tactile for our students. Any suggestions? Or suggestions in general for making storytime more fun and interactive with students who can’t necessarily enjoy illustrations?
Yes!
Some quick ideas:
– Pass out felt pieces with different textures on them (sew buttons, cellophane, paint puffy paint dots) and ask who’s got the bumpy piece, etc. (We do a lot of “anyone with a red piece, bring it up” during feltboard activities.) You could almost incorporate this into any theme. – For the “Little Mouse” flannelboard (hiding a mouse piece behind one of the houses on your board), you could sew a squeaker or jingle bell on the mouse. When you find it, your kids will be able to hear it, even if they can’t see it.
– For identifying numbers, you could make pieces with different amounts of buttons on them. Pass out the felt pieces, and you could collect them back.
Again, these are just off the top of my head; I’ll do some more thinking and hopefully will get some more ideas!
